Between 2 Worlds - Jose Jaramillo Explores Maya vs Gregorian Conceptual Time

There have been some excellent 2012 films produced recently. Regular readers will be aware that I have reviewed several of these here on site. There have also been some attempts to give voice to the Maya elders and the culture behind the calendar.

In this latest review I am looking Between2Worlds which is somewhere between the two. In fact it is really more about our inherent bias toward the Gregorian calendar system and our taking it for granted as just how things are/must be.

The film is geared toward both those interested in creating a 13 moon calendar as a replacement for the Gregorian, as it is for those who want to live by the true Maya Tzolkin. I suppose that it is fair to give a voice to both ideas. After all if we are to suggest scrapping the Gregorian system it is wise to have a couple of alternatives to consider.

I am no fan of Jose Arguelles and his now discredited system of Dreamspell, however I recognise that thousands of others are interested in his work. Lloydine Arguelles covers the rather fraudulent Dreamspell version of the Maya calendar system. John Major Jenkins then gives an explanation of the real Maya system. Between them the film retains balance.

Other interesting speakers examine the issues relating to human consciousness. The aim of the film seems to be an attempt to cause mankind to question his thoughtless exceptance of the Gregorian system for global commerce and spiritual concerns. This is a genuinely interesting point as we all live by this Christian calendar system whether we have any interest in its core uses (tracking church festivals and matters of money).

I must say that for production quality and breadth of information it is hard to beat my favourites 2012 Science or Superstition and Timewave 2013. Between 2 Worlds fails to meet their high standards sadly, but is still an interesting documentary. Do not expect to much information on general 2012 lore as it really is about attitudes toward calendrical time (seemed to miss an opportunity here).

As long as you know what to expect this is an enjoyable little docu-film and worth adding to your 2012/Maya DVD shelf.

I know that the producer, Jose Jaramillo, is making a second production currently. I for one am looking forward to this very much as I am sure the lacks in his first film will be covered in the second.
